Q: How difficult is the Horton Plains trek?

The circular trail is 9km on mostly flat terrain at high altitude. It takes approximately 3 hours at a comfortable pace. Suitable for most fitness levels. Bring a warm layer — temperatures at 2,100m can drop significantly especially in the early morning.

Q: How difficult is the Ella Rock hike?

Ella Rock is a moderately challenging 3-hour return hike with some steep sections through tea estates and forest trails. Good walking shoes are essential. Not suitable for young children or people with limited mobility.

Q: What is the best time to visit Horton Plains?

Early morning visits are strongly recommended. Cloud covers World's End by midday on most days — the earlier you arrive the clearer the views. This is why Day 2 starts early.

Q: Can I take the scenic train from Ella?

The famous Kandy to Ella train is one of the world's great rail journeys. We can arrange a one-way train segment where timetables permit — please mention this when enquiring and we will incorporate it into your itinerary.

Q: What is the weather like in the hill country?

The highlands are significantly cooler than the coast — expect 15–20°C in Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. Pack a warm jacket and light rain gear. Ella is warmer at around 22–25°C.

Q: Is this suitable for families with children?

Yes for older children aged 10 and above. The Horton Plains trek and Ella Rock hike require a good level of fitness. The Nine Arch Bridge walk is easy and suitable for all ages.

Q: Can I extend this tour further?

Building on the cultural highlights of Kandy, this tour ventures deeper into the island’s breathtaking central highlands — through Nuwara Eliya’s English-style gardens and Lake Gregory, across the plateau of Horton Plains National Park, and down to the charming village of Ella with its iconic Nine Arch Bridge and sweeping mountain views. Day 1 :

Bentota — Dambulla — Sigiriya — Kandy

06:00 — Pickup from your hotel in Bentota.
09:30 — Visit Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple — five ancient cave shrines dating to 3rd century BCE, UNESCO World Heritage site.
12:00 — Lunch near Sigiriya (own expense).
13:30 — Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress — 5th century royal citadel, 180m granite peak, ancient frescoes and spectacular summit views (UNESCO).
17:00 — Drive to Kandy. Check in to your hotel.
19:30 — Optional Kandy Cultural Show — traditional Kandyan dance performance (own expense).

Day 02 :

Kandy — Nuwara Eliya — Horton Plains

07:00 — Breakfast at hotel. Early departure is essential for Horton Plains.
08:00 — Visit Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake (brief morning visit).
09:30 — Scenic drive up into the tea country toward Nuwara Eliya. Stop at a working tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is processed and taste freshly brewed tea.
11:30 — Arrive Nuwara Eliya — Sri Lanka's hill station at 1,868m elevation. Stroll around Lake Gregory, visit the colonial-era post office and market, explore the manicured Victoria Park.
13:00 — Lunch in Nuwara Eliya (own expense).
14:30 — Drive to Horton Plains National Park entrance.
15:30 — Trek Horton Plains — a UNESCO World Heritage high-altitude plateau at 2,100m. Walk the circular trail (9km, approximately 3 hours) passing Baker's Falls waterfall and reaching World's End — a dramatic sheer cliff with an 870-metre drop and views stretching to the southern coast on a clear day.
18:30 — Drive to Ella. Check in to your hotel.
20:00 — Dinner in Ella town (own expense). Explore Ella's vibrant little restaurant and café strip.

Day 03 :

Ella — Nine Arch Bridge — Ella Rock — Return

07:00 — Breakfast at hotel.
08:00 — Walk to the Nine Arch Bridge — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks. Built in 1919 entirely from stone and cement without a single piece of metal, the bridge spans a lush jungle valley. Time your visit to catch the train passing overhead.
10:00 — Hike Ella Rock — a moderately challenging 3-hour return hike through tea plantations and eucalyptus forest to a panoramic clifftop with unobstructed views across the Ella Gap and surrounding highlands. Guide accompanies throughout.
13:00 — Lunch in Ella (own expense).
14:30 — Begin drive back to Bentota via the southern expressway.
18:30 — Approximate arrival at your hotel in Bentota.
